New Sounds

Seattle resident Trimpin has been creating and building his own instruments since childhood. “Trumpet was his instrument, and he wondered why it needed to be limited to playing one pitch at a time, and why that pitch had to fit into the system of conventional tuning,” Amy Rubin writes. “These questions led to his construction of the electric trumpet with two bells designed for microtonal polyphony.”

Check out a new electronic instrument created by a music education student at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam as part of a Harry Partch project for a secondary music ed. class. There is a video of the VelociChord creator playing a composition written specifically for this new instrument.

Exploration and manipulation of sound to create new sounds that are possibly deeply and personally meaningful. . .is this characteristic of a disposition we as music educators should nurture?
